Biography: Dr. Gao is an Associate Professor at Department of Chemical and Petroleum Engineering at the University of Pittsburgh. He received his PhD degree in chemical engineering from the University of California at Berkeley in 2004. Dr. Gao has won numerous honors & awards over the years including the CAREER Award from National Science Foundation in 2008, the Carnegie Science Center Advanced Materials Award in 2010, and the AIChE Owens-Corning Early Career Award in 2011, and two Pitt Innovator Awards in 2009 and 2012.  He was the leader of the University of Pittsburgh team that received the U.S.  Environmental Protection Agency P3: People, Prosperity and the Planet for Sustainability Design Competition Award in 2008 and the AIChE Youth Council on Sustainable Science and Technology Award in 2009.  Research highlights from his work, including anti-icing superhydrophobic coating, water-oil separation, and DNA separation have been featured on numerous television and radio news programs, as well as in newspaper, Nature Nanotechnology, U.S. News & World Report, U.S. Department of State website, China Daily, Science Daily, International Business Times, Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, Pittsburgh Tribune-Review, New England Cable News Network, KDKA TV and Radio News, and Fox News. Dr. Gao has been serving as the Chair of Advanced Materials & Manufacturing Committee for the Carnegie Science Awards since 2011.
