Dr. Esmat Zaidan works as an Assistant Professor of Policy, Planning, and Development at the Department of International Affairs at Qatar University. Prior to joining Qatar University, she worked as an Assistant Professor of Urban Planning at the United Arab Emirates University in UAE. Dr. Esmat received her PhD degree from University of Waterloo in Canada in 2011 in Geography and Environmental Management. She holds two master degrees, a Master of Urban Planning  and a Master of Applied Environmental Studies in Local Economic Development from University of Waterloo. 

Her research interests focus on sustainability in tourism planning and development, more specifically in socio-cultural dimensions of sustainability. Dr. Esmat is a researcher, and author of twopeer reviewed scholarly books, twobook-chapters, and nineresearch articles inreputable peer-reviewed journals. She has worked closely with tourism organizations, planners, and community members when conducting sustainability-oriented research in Dubai in the following areas: Societal implications and sustainable challenges of Dubai’s tourism development, community involvement in decision-making, emerging technologies in Tourism SMEs, resident attitudes towards tourists and tourism growth, the impact of cultural distance on local residents perception of tourism development, shopping tourism and destination development, shopping tourism and the new urban entertainment, cross-cultural information searching and travel behavior of MICE travelers, and developing strategies and overcoming barriers for “Dubai Tourism Vision 2020”.
