Title : Inheritance of root epidermal, xylem and phloem colour in IPC-126 × PM cross of tropical carrot (Daucus carota L.)

Abstract :

Carrot (Daucus carota L.) is the most important dietary sources of bioactive compounds, antioxidants and phytochemicals which are essential part of human health. Improvement of multivitamin with multinutritional varieties of carrot, there is essential need of inheritance pattern of root epidermal, phloem and xylem colour and it nutritional profile. Considering these objectives in view, we designed experimental platform with two different coloured nutritional carrot inbred lines were taken which are IPC-126 and PM having uniform epidermal, outer and inner core colour of purple and orange-red respectively. The F1 generations of both IPC-126 and PM were conditioned with purple epidermal and xylem colour and orange-red phloem colour. Subsequently F1 progeny were self-pollinated to get F2 generations of IPC-126 and PM. The F2 segregation of both IPC-126 PM, root epidermal and xylem colour was governed by single dominant genet which we denoted for purple as ‘P’ and for orange-red (or). Moreover, orange-red (OR) is dominant over purple in phloem colour (‘p’). These genetic inheritance of root epidermal, phloem and xylem colour and it nutritional profiling would help to accelerate carrot nutritional quality breeding especially anthocyanin and total carotenoids with uniform inner and outer core.

Title : Inheritance of root epidermal, phloem and xylem in White Pale × PM cross in tropical carrot (Daucus carota L.)

Abstract :

Carrot (Daucus carota L.) is the most important biennial winter root vegetable crop cultivated throughout the world. It has been classified as vitaminized food due to its rich sources of ß-carotene, lycopene, lutein and anthocyanin in orange, red, yellow and black colour of carrot. Recent increasing awareness of nutritional security, there is urgent need to improve multivitamin with multicolored and multinutritional tropical carrots. For these achievement, there is need to clear understanding of genetic nature and inheritance pattern of root epidermis, phloem and xylem colour of carrots. Therefore, considering these objectives our experimental platform were designed and evaluated by hybridization between White Pale ×PM and PM ×White Pale crosses followed by self-fertilization of F1 for advancing generation of F2 generations. In these experimental studies, both F1 progeny of White Pale ×PM and PM ×White Pale were expressed orange-red colour epidermal and xylem colour with yellow colour of outer-core. The F2 progeny of White Pale ×PM and PM ×White Pale crosses were clearly segregated into ratio of 3: 1 of Mendalian model with colour grouping of Royal Horticultural Colour mini chart with larger populations. It confirmed that root epidermal and xylem colour is conditioned by single dominant gene which notified as ‘OR’ (orange) and ‘y’ (yellow) and further it more, yellow colour (Y) is dominant over orange colour (or) of phloem.
