Bio:

Prof Kalsom Kayat is a Professor and resident faculty in OYA Graduate School of Business. She also serves as a Professor for the Tourism Program in Universiti Utara Malaysia College of Law, Government and International Studies (UUM COLGIS). She received her PhD in Parks, Recreation and Tourism Resources from Michigan State University and her Master of Science as well as Bachelor of Science Degrees in Economics from the University of North Texas. Being in the academia for almost 20 years, Prof  Kalsom has been teaching, researching and writing in the areas of tourism management, tourism policy, and tourism planning especially on issues related to community participation and development. She headed several policy-related consultancies for the Ministry of Tourism, the Malaysian Tourism Promotion Board, and State Economic Planning Units. She was appointed as the Director of the Research and Innovation Management Center (RIMC) in UUM between 2013 and 2015. Dr Kalsom’s key research interest is on issues around the development of the rural community-based homestay programme, which serves as an important tourism product offered Malaysia to the travelling public. She began researching in this area as soon as she completed her Ph.D. in 2000. Prior to joining UUM, she served the Malaysian Tourism Promotion Board as an Assistant Director in its Research Division.
